A 30-year-old Mechanicville man has been arrested for robbing and assaulting a Capitaland cab driver at about 2:30 this morning. The 39-year-old male cab driver picked up Alexander Symington (of 1 Cypress Street, Mechanicville) on Broadway and took him to Sergeant Place and Fourth Avenue in Mont Pleasant. After arriving at that location, Symington asked the driver for “change” for a $50 bill. When the driver removed money from his pocket, Symington tried to grab it, but the driver resisted. Symington jumped on him and bit the driver’s hand several times. He then punched the driver in the head several times, pushed him to the ground and kicked him in the face. Symington did not get any money, so he took the driver’s coat and knapsack from the cab and ran south on Fourth.

Patrol officers Ed Ritz and Darryl Mallard responded to the scene and began tracking fresh footprints in the snow. They followed the footprints to the rear door of 1329 Fourth, a vacant residence. The officers found Symington hiding in a closet inside the residence.

Symington is charged with Robbery-2nd degree, Assault-3rd degree and Criminal Trespass-2nd degree. He was arraigned in Police Court and is in the Schenectady County Jail.

The cab driver sustained injuries to his face, arm and hand that required treatment at St. Clare’s Hospital.
