SUBJECT:COUNTERFEIT MONEY BEING USED IN SCHENECTADY

Detectives are investigating several instances in which counterfeit 20- and 100-dollar bills have been used at Schenectady businesses.

Since May 2nd, the counterfeit bills were used at 6 city businesses. At this time, it is not known who manufactured the bills or passed them.

Authentic paper currency greater than $1 has the following 2 watermarks that counterfeits do not:

1) by holding a bill to the light, a smaller image of that bill’s president should be visible on the far right side, and

2) “USA” and that bill’s denomination will be written vertically from top to bottom somewhere on the note.

In addition, counterfeit bills can usually be uncovered by comparing a suspicious bill to an authentic bill of the same denomination.

Police should be contacted if counterfeit bills are received.
