A 42-year-old man has been charged with assaulting his 19-year-old female roommate with a sledgehammer early this morning in the Jay Street apartment they shared, as well as another man about 3 hours earlier inside a store located below the apartment building.

At about 3:15 a.m., officers responded to 125 Jay Street for a report of a female assault victim who was bleeding severely. Lindsey Gauldin had been asleep inside her apartment when her roommate, Andrew David, struck her several times in the head with a small sledgehammer. Despite sustaining a fractured skull in the attack, Gauldin was able to flee the apartment and run to a neighboring apartment for help. Officers located David in his apartment smoking crack cocaine and took him into custody without incident. The sledgehammer was recovered.

While at Police Headquarters, David told officers that he had assaulted a man inside The Spring Eagle store earlier in the night. Officers responded to the store and were told by the owner, 35-year-old Timothy Lake, that David entered his store at about 11:30 p.m. and hit him in the back of the head with a rock-filled pouch. Lake sustained a laceration that required stitches.

Ms. Gauldin was treated at the scene by paramedics and airlifted to Albany Medical Center. She was discharged from the hospital earlier today.

David was charged with the felonies of Assault in the 1st degree (for the attack on Gauldin) and Assault in the 2nd degree (for the attack on Lake). He was arraigned in Police Court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail without bail.
