SUBJECT:Buckle up New York
The Schenectady Police Department along with State, County and Local Police agencies will be participating in Buckle up New York, CLICK IT OR TICKET from May 19, 2008 to June 1, 2008. This joint effort will consist of fixed seatbelt check points as well as routine seatbelt patrols thru out our city.
For the last year that data is available motor vehicle traffic crashes were the leading cause of death for every age 3 – 6 years old and 8 – 34 years old. Seatbelt enforcement is the single most important traffic enforcement action we can take as Police Officers in order to save lives.
Prior to seatbelt laws being enacted in 1984 usage statewide was about 16%. Statewide usage climbed steadly to 63% in 1990, up to 70% in 2000 rising to a high of 85% in 2005. Currently in 2007 usage is about 83%.
In Schenectady as we see compliance rise we strive to continue to enforce what we know is the single most important action you as a driver can do to increase your chances of not being injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash. Take the two seconds it requires to Buckle Up New York, and make sure those in your vehicle do the same. Remember to use the proper child restraint seat and have it properly installed and fitted for your child.
Currently in Schenectady a driver or front seat passenger without a seatbelt face a 85.00$ fine, those under the age or 16 years old or those not in a car seat raise the fine to 100.00$ as well as three points on your drivers license.
Remember to drive safe and Buckle Up New York, CLICK IT OR TICKET.
