SUBJECT:Police Chief Selection Process

Mayor Brian Stratton advises that with today’s publication of the Civil Service eligibility lists for the position of Chief of Police for the City of Schenectady, he and Public Safety Commissioner Wayne E. Bennett will move forward in earnest with the process to select the best possible candidate for the position. The first step in that process will be confirmation with all eligible candidates that they are still interested in consideration for the Chief of Police position.

Consistent with Civil Service Law, the Mayor will have the latitude to consider eligible candidates from both the Promotional List (internal candidates) as well as the Open Competitive List (external candidates). Selection from the Promotional List will be optional but, not mandatory under law as less than three internal candidates received a passing grade in the examination. The Mayor will also have the option to consider the top three candidates from the Open Competitive List based upon their final scores. Should one of those three advise they are no longer interested in consideration, the fourth and final eligible candidate on that list may also be considered.

Although there is no specific timetable the Mayor ensures that this process will be completed as expeditiously as possible without sacrificing the diligence that will be required to ensure the final selection is in the best interest of the City of Schenectady.
