SUBJECT:Adult Male Charged With Sexually Abusing a Child

On Wednesday, October 29, 2003, Schenectady Police received a complaint from a parent of six-year-old child that the child was sexually abused early that morning by a family acquaintance using erotic paraphernalia. Upon receiving the complaint, Schenectady Police filed a report of suspected child abuse with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. With the assistance of Schenectady County Child Protective caseworkers, Schenectady Police Youth Aid Detectives launched an investigation of the complaint.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Schenectady Police Detectives made the following arrest:

Bernard John Brown, 45, 506 Brandywine Ave., Schenectady charged with:

* Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Misdemeanor)

* First Degree Sexual Abuse (D Felony)

Brown, who was reportedly babysitting for the child at the time of the incident, was arraigned Thursday in Schenectady City Court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail without bail.
